The price of a Spanish passport could increase considerably in the coming months, according to a proposal by the ADE (Administrative Administration of the Dominican Republic) reported today in the Iberian press: a warning among Cubans naturalized under the Law of Grandchildren. The proposal by Spanish diplomats to quadruple the price of a passport is already causing concern.cupaction among Cubans who have access to Spanish nationality thanks to the Law of Democratic Memory, also known as grandchildren law.
The Association of Spanish Diplomats (ADE) proposes raise the current rate from 30 to 116 euros, in order to address the lack of staff and infrastructure at consulates, especially in Havana and Buenos Aires, where the largest number of applications for Spanish citizenship exist due to the Law on Grandchildren.
This possible increase This would represent 286% more than the current price and seeks to match what is already charged in countries like Italy.
The measure would directly impact thousands of descendants of Republican exiles, many of them living in Cuba, where the demand for naturalization has grown exponentially.
In Buenos Aires alone, there are 600.000 pending applications, reflecting the saturation of the consular network. In the case of Cuba, new Spanish citizens need to renew or process their passports, a process that already faces considerable delays.
Cubans: Possible increase in the price of the Spanish passport
Increasing the cost could pose a significant economic barrier for those already facing economic hardship, such as Cubans, who have to access the informal foreign exchange market to buy euros that were today, according to the Touch, at 400 Cuban pesos for one euro.
The CCOO (Working Council of Workers) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs warns that this measure "further complicates" access to consular services and "shifts the cost of the budgetary crisis onto the most vulnerable citizens."
For its part, the General Council of Spanish Citizens Abroad also opposes the increase, warning that the increase could discourage consular registration and create inequalities between those who can afford to travel to Spain and those who cannot.
The proposal has not yet been accepted by the Government, but it has already been submitted to the Congress of Deputies.
If approved, it would directly affect a growing community: new Spaniards of Cuban origin, among others, many of whom are just beginning their documentation process under the Grandchildren Law.

With the high cost of obtaining the necessary documentation and legalizing it, and now the price of a passport is also rising, I think they'll leave descendants with virtually no option. I hope it's not true. 🙏🏻
I think raising the price of a Spanish passport to 116 euros is excessive, no matter how much interest Spanish Cubans put into obtaining one. Because it's the only option they have to travel or emigrate, it's very harsh on Spain's part. It's okay to increase it for the reason they say, but not by that much. 50 euros maybe, but not four times as much. How long are these countries going to crush us?
Apparently the only one that doesn't have currency is ETECSA
Who are the ones who want to keep getting rich? Spain knows that there is hunger in Cuba; there isn't even a euro because they don't pay us for that, and getting those 30 is a problem. Imagine 116. What crazy person came up with that?
With the economic problems we have on the island, which doesn't give us enough to eat, it's already enough, and now this is like another blow to Cubans, it's an abuse.
A very cruel measure for Cubans, whose salaries aren't enough for anything at all. Traveling to Havana to complete all the necessary paperwork before obtaining a passport is already a headache, and if they raise that price, it will be very unfair.
Oh my goodness, but there's no truce with the Cubans. We're squeezed more than a dishcloth, as if all the expenses incurred in completing the citizenship process, even if we're descendants, weren't enough: documents and transportation to get to the capital from the provinces, it's already a fortune for those who live on a salary. It's a shame.
Raise the price? And how big are Cubans' pockets for that? Oh my God...🤦
This measure will almost certainly not be implemented, because it contravenes the political decision of some sectors in Spain and the US to continue encouraging the departure of Cubans at all costs.
That is distressing because the descendants are fighting for recupto be their citizenship and we Cubans do not have the facility to buy euros, in my opinion for the descendants who keep the price as it is. It is a right that we have.
