The week of late May and early June begins amidst an economic crisis in Cuba that shows no signs of improving with each passing month. Inflation remains at its peak, and this is reflected in the foreign exchange market, especially the informal or "black market," as it is known. This is how the exchange rate for the dollar, euro, and other currencies on the island began.
According to the study published daily by the independent media El ToqueMajor currencies remain stable at the start of this week, May 29th. The Schengen zone euro remains the most expensive currency on the black market, at a rate of one euro note for 200 Cuban pesos. So far, it's the only currency to have reached this level, although the US dollar is approaching.
What is the exchange rate of the US dollar in Cuba? The dollar is being sold and bought in Cuba at an average of 195 Cuban pesos on the street. The dollar was on the rise last week and it was thought that it would soon reach 200 pesos such as euro, but it has remained at 195 for the time being. This doesn't mean that in some provinces it has reached 200; remember, this is just an average.
