This was the heroic rescue of a man who fell into a well in Holguín.

Dozens of rescue specialists and firefighters from the Cuban province of Holguín carried out a heroic rescue of Fernando Herrera Ramírez on June 12. A 63-year-old worker from the UBPC "January 28", known as the Guajenal plan, in the Frank País García municipality.

Herrera Ramírez had been trapped since the early hours of this Sunday, June 11, almost 45 feet inside a well, which literally Collapsed under his feet when he and his stepson were cleaning up after the heavy rains experienced in the eastern provinces in recent days. 

Initially, many measures were taken to help him withstand the physical and psychological stress of the many hours he spent underground—more than 24 hours. He was also given oxygen, and efforts were made to ensure he was as comfortable as possible while awaiting the completion of this rescue, which was described as "very complex." 

“It hasn't been easy to dig every meter we dug, removing rocks and earth, without damaging anything so as to prevent another collapse. The work has been long and hard. The tenacity of these rescuers is only matched by the resilience of Fernando, who is still ALIVE, AND WITH THE WILL AND STRENGTH TO SURVIVE,” Moa TV reporter Yulieska Hernández wrote on her Facebook page.

HOW WAS THE RESCUE OF A MAN IN THE HOLGUÍN WELL? 

As the extraction process for Fernando Herrera Ramírez from the well where he had fallen neared completion, some images were published showing him almost completely buried, but in good spirits. Once near him, rescuers gradually unearthed his torso and pulled him out with a rope. He was then taken by ambulance to the Moa hospital for various tests.

"His head looks fine, with no bruises, and his arms too. Safety measures and other protocols require putting a helmet on him and securing his neck. They've already given him water. Now they're slowly starting to take him out, very carefully, in case he has any fractures," were the initial impressions.
