In a context of economic difficulties and lack of investment, Cuba's state-owned telecommunications company, ETECSA, reported that Internet traffic in the country has experienced a significant increase in the last year, especially via mobile phones.

According to Tania Velázquez, CEO of ETECSA, this growth is due to a change in consumption patterns, driven by new players in the Cuban economy, who are increasingly turning to digital information and entertainment.

Cuba currently has eight million active mobile lines, an impressive 95% of which are enabled for internet access.

Furthermore, 76% of mobile devices support 4G technology, and 90% are smartphones. However, despite these advances, connectivity problems persist, exacerbated by the energy crisis and frequent power outages that affect network access.

The president of ETECSA also highlighted that 80% of the capacity of the submarine cable connecting Cuba to the rest of the world is already being utilized, while infrastructure investments have failed to keep pace with growing data traffic.

Despite these challenges, social media remains popular in Cuba, with Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and WhatsApp as the most used platforms, according to ETECSA.

Furthermore, e-commerce has shown significant growth, with Transfermóvil standing out, reaching more than five million users and growing by 30% in 2024.

Although this increase is partly due to the lack of cash in banks and ATMs, it is an indication of the growing dependence of mobile services for making payments and money transfers on the island.
