Unlike Cuba, the Dominican Republic is making great strides in the use of technology and travel. Now, they announced that starting in February 2025, there will be changes, for the better, in the issuance of passports in this nation.
In this way, the implementation of the electronic passport For Dominicans, it's about to become a reality with an estimated investment of six billion pesos. First, they're about to be exempt from requiring a Schengen visa to travel to Europe, and now they're about to have the first biometric passport in their history.
In this regard, Digna Reynoso, director of the General Directorate of Passports (DGP), announced that the first Dominican electronic passport is expected to be issued in February of next year, at an approximate cost of $20 and an investment similar to the one mentioned above.

Reynoso pointed out that the issuance of this new document will imply a complete transformation in the technological infrastructure and processes of Dominican airports, such as Santo Domingo or Punta Cana.
"We face the challenge of developing the electronic passport. We are working at full capacity with OASIS; they are the ones leading the process through Law 340. Therefore, in the coming months, we will be talking about another level of electronic passport internationally," he said.
The official added that "the price of the passport would remain as it is; we're talking less than $20, which would be about six billion Dominican pesos."
The issuance of the Dominican Electronic Passport, one of President Abinader's main goals, will provide Dominicans with a travel passport with a chip, increasing the document's security.
In addition, it will achieve "international recognition" and facilitate visa-free entry for Dominicans into several countries, the DGP explained in the document.
