Electricity fraud reported in Havana: Havana Electric Company employees and customers sanctioned for manipulating consumption. More details below. A total of seven employees of the Electric Company y 14 clients from the Plaza de la Revolución municipality were sanctioned by the Provincial People's Court of Havana durante a oral and public trial, after being found guilty of crimes related to electricity fraud.
The accused, according to note in the Tribuna de La Habana newspaper, they faced charges for Forgery of banking and commercial documents, and Continued Bribery, in a case that uncovered a corruption network within the Cuban capital's energy system.
The investigation revealed that the fraud consisted of the manipulation of the records of the Comprehensive Automated Commercial Management System, through which artificially reduced electricity consumption of certain customers with high levels of energy expenditure.

Among those sanctioned were: provincial system administrator, company computer scientist, staff of the Commercial Office of Plaza de la Revolución, and inspectors and readers-collectors involved in the fraudulent scheme.
The court handed down sentences of six to eight years of deprivation of liberty for the main perpetrators. Others involved, including the customers benefiting from manipulation, received Economic sanctions y administrative fines proportional to their degree of participation.
Some commentators from the aforementioned newspaper pointed out that these events were already "old news" and that the news was always delayed in its proper time. Others questioned the names of the "scoundrels" involved in this electricity fraud in Havana.
"Justice has finally been served, something that was long overdue, or years overdue, as these types of crimes have been occurring for quite some time, and not only in the Plaza Municipality. I myself have been a victim of this modus operandi on more than one occasion and in more than one municipality. I lived in the Boyeros Municipality in Aldabo and received electricity consumption readings that were inconsistent with my actual spending," commented another.

Poor people, who do these things out of necessity because of the poverty in this country. If they were paid a decent wage, there would be fewer robberies here.
