Official Gazette: Cuba declares May 2nd as a day off from work with pay

The Cuban government, through the Official Gazette, declares another non-working day, following the May 1st international holiday. More details to follow. The Council of Ministers of the Republic of Cuba, through Decree 126/2025 published In the Official Gazette No. 15, declared the coming May 2, 2025 as a day of work break with payment of the wage, in recognition of the "efforts of the Cuban people in the face of difficult situations."

The provision, signed by Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz, is based on Article 100 of Law 116 "Labor Code", and is exceptional in nature, applying to the entire country only on May 2. 2025.

"This decision responds to the current context and seeks to reward the resilience, commitment, and discipline of the Cuban people," the Official Gazette states.

This decree is also based on the provisions of article 137 of the Constitution of the Republic of Cuba, reinforcing the government's willingness to "support the people in difficult times."

Because of this, Cuban workers will enjoy a "well-deserved rest," according to officials, on May 2nd without any salary cuts, in a show of "institutional support and appreciation for the collective effort," they said.

Of course, following the announcement, social media exploded with comments both for and against the new May 2nd recess, published today in the Official Gazette.

Without electricity, without food, without water, or anything, nothing; but to go out and demonstrate the absent conformity and the vanished commitment," wrote one user on the amplified note by Canal Caribe.
