The Spanish Consulate General in Havana continues to face significant delays in issuing the credentials necessary for applicants to schedule appointments and process Spanish nationality under the Democratic Memory Law, known as the "Grandchildren's Law."
These credentials, which consist of a number and a password, are essential to advance in the process of applying for Spanish nationality, a possibility that ends in October of this year and that due to the slowness of the process and the high demand, may take up to 4 years to complete, according to the latest details from specialists.
Throughout 2024, numerous applicants expressed their frustration on social media due to delays that, in some cases, exceeded seven months.
For example, in June 2024, users reported that credentials had been stuck since November 8, 2023, preventing access to more than 600 available appointments.
Despite these difficulties, in late June 2024, some applicants who had waited since November 2023 began receiving their credentials, allowing them to schedule appointments for mid-August of that year.
Grandchildren Law and Credentials at the Consulate
How is the credentials process going almost in April? 2025, according to the questions and answers of the group of Facebook "Children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren of Spanish emigrants" in Cuba. According to this information, the date for issuing the credentials is currently March 2024.
"They're going to be around March 9th, I've read that they're working on the system, so for now, everything is on hold until they update and activate it," said a user of this group today, which hundreds of people on the island follow.
It is important to note that, as of March 2024, 301,121 applications for Spanish citizenship by origin had been received at the Consular Civil Registry Offices.
Of these, more than 95% were registered at the Spanish Consular Offices in Latin America and at the Spanish Consulate General in Miami. In particular, the consulates in Argentina and Havana accounted for a large portion of these applications.
Given this situation, the Council of Ministers of Spain approved an extension of the deadline to apply for Spanish nationality under the Law of Democratic Memory until October 22, 2025This extension seeks to provide more time for descendants of Spaniards affected by delays in the process.

I need to know where the date on my husband's credentials is. It's from May 24th.
Good morning, if October 25th arrives, you can't make more appointments and how to make them by WhatsApp and Facebook?
I submitted my PDF on February 29, 2024, and that month they skipped it, and there are 600 people requesting their credentials without a response. After waiting a year, it's unfair. They say street shopping costs €600, but Spanish officials turn a blind eye. How sad!
Good afternoon and blessings to all. I have great concern. I sent my PDF on March 5, 2024. On March 5, 2025 I received a response that the attached file was empty. After 3 days I received another email stating that the subject in the email was incorrectly entered. However, I checked and it was correct: "LMD APPOINTMENTS." My big concerncupaction is that when I send my PDF again and wait 6 months again or more and I get a response that something is wrong and I do not have time to obtain my nationality, although I can prove that I sent the email correctly, please I need your help. I have been in this process since November 15, 2022 and I do not see any progress. I await your response. Best regards to all, thank you.
Good morning, I am the granddaughter of a Spanish citizen and I make my PDF.
and I am waiting for my credentials dated April 28, 2024. I already have my file with my birth certificate, my father's and my grandmother's certificate, which is the Spanish one for whom I am doing the process. I also have a photocopy of my grandmother's certificate, my identity card, also the marital status of my father and mother at the time of my birth and the death of my father and my grandmother, all legalized in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. I think that those should be the documents that I must present. I hope you give me an answer, without any other matter than to discuss my cordial greetings, thank you.
Let's hope that the credentials continue to advance a lot, thank you?
I have been a Spanish citizen for several months but I have been
I've been waiting a long time for my daughter's credentials, they are from December 27th, 23 and they haven't arrived. It's not easy to do.
I have been a citizen for several months now, but I have been waiting for my daughter's credentials for a while, and they haven't arrived. They are from December 27, 23. What a long time it takes.
Hello everyone, I believe that the descendants of Spaniards in Cuba deserve at least more serious and faster work in terms of citizenship procedures. We owe it to our Spanish ancestors who loved their land so much and, due to cruel fate, had to leave Spain. Thank you very much.
My son has been waiting for his credentials for a whole year. Let's hope they arrive soon, God willing, by March 18, 2024.
Good afternoon, why are the credentials being delayed? If I submitted everything on June 10, 2024, I would like to know why it is taking so long.
What should I do to start the process as a great-grandchild to obtain nationality? That is, steps to follow, documents to present.
Blessings and health to all ... on June 24, 2023 I sent my PDF, but I never received the credentials, I signed up for a WhatsApp group, wonderful people are my more than 300 waiting for said credentials, I complained and asked for help from the ombudsman whom I thank, after more than 10 attempts to complain, they responded that their appointment system was not designed to provide a solution, so I sent it again, then after more than a year without receiving anything, I send it again on March 14, 2024 and it's been another year and I still don't receive the credentials. I still apply for annex 3. In my family, everyone is Spanish, except me. I have written and digital evidence of said claims. I hope it is resolved because the truth is torture.
The month of February 2024 was almost completely skipped, there is a group of more than 600 people waiting
My credentials took a year, now another year to arrive, and I took another folio for the passport.
He needed Spanish citizenship to work
Good afternoon. My mother and her siblings submitted their credentials on February 9, 2024, and my uncles' credentials have already arrived, and hers hasn't. They say they'll be arriving on March 9. What's this? What's going on? Letters have been sent complaining. We need a response now!
On February 27, 2024, send the email. and on March 4, 2025They are sending me a refusal because of the accents on my surnames when that's how it is written on my ID. It's a lack of respect for those of us who wait, and let it be clear: THEY ARE NOT DOING US A FAVOR. IT'S A RIGHT AND AN OBLIGATION ON THE PART OF SPAIN.
Good evening, I'm in the same situation as you. I sent my email on January 26th of last year, and this year on January 8th I received the same rejection because of the accents. Can you tell me what you did?
There are many complaints, considering that hundreds of people who submitted their documentation more than a year ago were ignored by the automated system for accessing their credentials. I emphasize the more than 600 people who filed a group claim in February 2024 and are waiting to be addressed.
