More heat, more blackouts: Guiteras announces technical shutdown in the middle of summer

Amid daily blackouts, temperatures exceeding 33 degrees, and no visible solution to the energy crisis, the Antonio Guiteras Thermoelectric Plant is preparing for a technical shutdown. "Oh no!" even government officials are exclaiming. The news was confirmed by the official journalist José Miguel Solís through his Facebook account.

"Workers at the Antonio Guiteras Thermal Power Plant are finalizing preparations for a 72-hour technical shutdown to repair the high-temperature reheater, as soon as SEN availability allows," he said.

According to plant director Rubén Campos Olmo, the high-temperature reheater needs urgent repairs.

Currently, the plant is contributing 235 MW to the National Electric System, so its detention will have a direct impact on blackouts that affect millions of Cubans.

The most worriedcupThe problem is that the exact date of the shutdown has not been specified. According to Campos Olmo, maintenance will only be performed when the electrical system's conditions allow, leaving a specific schedule up in the air.

Without Guiteras, it is clear that blackouts will increase in Cuba.

The timing has also drawn strong criticism from the public: June marks the beginning of summer, with increased energy demand due to extreme heat, and with no alternative generation sources to cushion the impact.

"Just what we needed," "My God, have mercy on us who live without electricity. This is already out of control when it comes to fuel, to technical shutdowns. This is here to stay," or "When will this country release news that supports the people? Everything is going backwards," were some of the comments on the matter.

In parallel, a desalination plant project has been mentioned to ensure the industrial use of water without affecting the supply to the population.

However, Solís himself clarified that funding is pending, which many interpret as a strategy to contain the growing discontent.

For now, the only thing that's clear is that the Guiteras power line will be shut down for 72 hours, at a date yet to be determined, and that citizens will continue to face heat, darkness, and insomnia in one of the worst electricity crises Cuba has experienced in years.

  1. This planned maintenance in the middle of summer should not surprise us, we know that the UNE Making plans is a disaster, look at the plans by Blocks in the blackouts, they tell you a time range and they turn off when it best suits them, to eliminate the client who tries to plan for their fateful blackout plan.

  2. It's never going to be 72 hours. When that thing stops, it takes a long time to get going again, and it goes in and out again several times. It's better not to touch it.
