Cuban minister condemns brutal attack by taxi driver on elderly woman: action taken against attacker

Cuban Transport Minister Eduardo Rodríguez Dávila publicly condemned the incident on Facebook following the viral spread of a video in which a Taxis-Cuba taxi driver brutally assaulted an elderly woman with a disability. The incident sparked a wave of outrage on social media and digital outlets.

Rodriguez Davila confirmed The attacker was a professional driver of a classic car (Gran Car), assigned to Taxi Agency 9-Cuba in Havana. Although he did not reveal the name of the suspect, he did clarify that the victim is his wife's aunt.

The violent incident occurred last 31 March and was captured on video by witnesses present at the scene. The images quickly went viral on social media, generating outrage both within the country and abroad.

"There is no justification for physical abuse and mistreatment in any case," the official said. Minister of Transport of Cuba, in a statement published on its official Facebook account.

The head of the department described the assault as a serious ethical and legal violation. He explained that the driver violated two labor violations: Obligation 2.2.18, on standards of social conduct, and Article 7.7, which sanctions the disturbance of public order during the provision of the service.

Cuban taxi driver caught brutally attacking an elderly woman

Given the seriousness of the incident, Taxis-Cuba terminated the employee's employment contract following an extraordinary disciplinary council meeting attended by Agency 9 executives and union representatives.

In addition, the aggressor was handed over to the police authorities to face the corresponding legal consequences. He was transferred to a unit of the National Revolutionary Police (PNR).

The minister took the opportunity to highlight the exemplary behavior of the majority of Taxis-Cuba employees, who, he said, perform essential functions such as transporting patients with serious illnesses.

Reactions to the conviction were swift: "The people demand follow-up and a final response. Enough of the abuse and impunity," "Respect for our elders must never be in crisis. Nothing justifies the mistreatment of the elderly, much less of a family member," and "The only minister who is truly respected, thank you very much for your work and timely information!"
