One of the most active embassies in Cuba has officially announced its imminent closure for economic reasons, according to an official statement on social media.

According to a statement published Tuesday on its official Facebook page, the Netherlands Council of Ministers approved a proposal to introduce changes to the global diplomatic network on Thursday, April 17, in response to upcoming budget cuts and the desire to create and maintain a flexible and effective network.
"The decision includes the intention to close five embassies and two consulates general. The Havana headquarters is one of these five embassies. We expect to receive instructions in the coming months regarding the closure date," the statement reads. official note.
According to Dutch diplomats, this means "that we will continue our work until further notice, including consular services to the public. Any future changes to services will be announced as soon as they become clear."
"For years, the Embassy has been a vital support for artists and social activists. Thanks to the GoCuba program, a significant portion of Cuban independent cinema was possible. Thank you for your support throughout this period," said a Cuban filmmaker.
Official closure of the Dutch Embassy in Cuba
"Terrible news that will leave those who counted on the support of one of the most important embassies in Cuba helpless," another added.
Before, the Dutch airline, KLM, had also suspended its usual seasonal flights to Cuba. Therefore, this closure of the Dutch embassy in Cuba doesn't surprise many.
"A real shame, although understandable. We already lost KLM before, now it's the embassy's turn," lamented another Cuban, in response to the news that many considered untrue, but which the Dutch Embassy in Havana has just confirmed.
The official headquarters of this diplomatic mission was located at 7 2007th Ave., corner of 22, Miramar, Cuba. To date, no official comment has been made from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to UN data compiled by Datosmacro.com, in 2020 there were approximately 1.501 Cubans, aalthough this figure may have increased since then.
