The Spanish chain Meliá Hotels reported that it is currently in free fall, as tourism in Cuba plummets and sinks, at the beginning of 2025, their income.
According to report from the well-known Spanish hotel chain and brand, Meliá recorded a notable drop in its operations in Cuba during the first quarter of 2025, in a context marked by the tourism crisis on the island.
Just as the company celebrates 35 years of presence in the country, the financial results reflect a concerncupin the face of contraction, confirming that Cuba continues to be a "challenging" destination for the Iberian hotel chain, which, despite everything, continues to support the destination.
According to the financial report, until the end of March the average rate per room fell by 8,3%, while the revenue per room available decreased by 20,8% compared to the same period in 2024.
To this is added one orcuphotel activity of only 40,5%, significantly below the chain's international average, which demonstrates a clear weakness of the Cuban market within the group's global portfolio.
This situation contrasts with the positive results achieved by Meliá in other regions such as Cancún and the Dominican Republic.
In Cuba, however, structural problems, such as widespread shortages and frequent power outages, have deteriorated both internal operations and the visitor experience at hotels.
Due to tourism problems in Cuba, the Meliá hotel chain itself had to find an importer to support its basic operations at its facilities on the island.
Meliá is affected by the tourism crisis in Cuba.
The report also highlighted the negative impact of international media coverage of the Cuban crisis, which weakens the destination's image in key source markets.
Countries such as the United Kingdom, Belgium, and Argentina have also completely canceled flights to Cuba and other regions and significantly reduced their frequencies, contributing to the collapse of visitors during this year's peak season.
Currently, Meliá manages about 14 thousand rooms distributed in around 30 hotels located in destinations such as Havana, Varadero, Cayo Santa María, Cayo Coco, Holguín, Santiago de Cuba, Trinidad and Cienfuegos.
However, the low tourist influx has impacted rates, drastically reducing revenue.
In the first three months of 2025The island received 29,7% fewer foreign visitors than in the same period last year. The trend continues to be negative for tourism in Cuba, and Meliá can no longer hide it.
