This is how the price of the euro has increased in the last few hours: Exchange rates of the dollar and the MLC in Cuba today

Exchange rates in the Cuban informal market maintain their uneven trend today, with the MLC registering its lowest value in weeks and the euro surpassing a new high.

This Tuesday, April 9, the euro is quoted at 367 Cuban pesos (CUP), after an increase of 2 pesos compared to the previous day. The US dollar remains stable at 360 CUP, while the freely convertible currency (MLC) falls to 262 CUP, with no signs of recuperation. The Canadian dollar is trading today at 228 CUP, with a slight drop of 2 pesos.

Fall of the MLC: signs of weakness and disinterest

The sustained decline of the MLC confirms its loss of symbolic and functional value in the Cuban economy. Many merchants and buyers consider it an intermediary currency without physical backing or appeal for savings or trade. Unlike the dollar or the euro, which have clearer outlets on the black market or for remittances, the MLC seems to be losing its usefulness in the eyes of many Cubans.

Added to this is the uncertainty on the part of the government, which has not yet clearly defined the future of the stores in MLC nor access to foreign currency for the common citizen.

The euro soars against the dollar in international markets.

Globally, the euro has gained ground against the dollar as a result of the economic turmoil generated by the trade war between the United States and its main trading partners. On Tuesday, the euro surpassed $1,11, reaching its highest level in almost a decade.

The trend was consolidated after Donald Trump announced a temporary 90-day suspension of tariffs on several countries, but not China. The pause brought relief to financial markets but weakened the dollar against most other currencies.

In the Cuban context, however, these international fluctuations do not alone determine the behavior of the informal market, where supply, demand, and state restrictions play a major role.

How much are salaries in Cuba?

The minimum wage in Cuba is 2,100 pesos per month, which is equivalent to:

  • $5,7

  • 5,73 Euros

  • 8 MLC

The average salary, approximately 4,200 CUP, barely reaches:

  • $11,6

  • 11,4 Euros

  • 16 MLC

These data confirm that even purchasing a single unit of foreign currency on the informal market far exceeds what a Cuban earns in a day—or several. This maintains constant pressure on purchasing power and fuels the social and economic crisis.
