In recent weeks, Cuba has been facing serious difficulties in producing bread, a situation that has compromised daily deliveries of this staple food in several parts of the country.
According to Jorge Luis Arce Ferrer, provincial director of the Food Industry in Santiago de Cuba, the wheat flour shortage in the western part of the country, caused by technical problems at the mills, affected national coverage. However, he explained that these problems have already been resolved.
Shipments of flour
A new shipment arrived by road early Friday morning, and another truck is expected later this afternoon/evening, allowing bread production and distribution to resume.
Each municipality will receive the quantity it demands, starting with Santiago de Cuba with approximately 23 tons, and then the supply will be distributed to the rest of the province. In total, the province consumes approximately 51.8 tons of flour daily.
Arce Ferrer clarified that "starting this afternoon, production and sales will begin to stabilize," although he warned that the process may vary depending on the energy situation in each region, which could cause differences in delivery times.
In response to the rumors, the executive assured that production of rationed bread for the entire population and priority sectors will resume as of today. He also announced that "a wheat ship is expected to dock at the port of Santiago de Compostela from May 15th onward to begin processing the grain at the Frank País mill. It will then be distributed to the production plants in the region."
Bakeries and their managers will be responsible for informing the public of the product's production and sales hours.
