Authorities in Santiago de Cuba began distributing one pound of rice per consumer this week, corresponding to the March Standard Family Basket.
The delivery, which will be carried out through the ration book system, is part of an attempt to alleviate the prolonged shortage affecting the population, especially in this eastern territory.
According to provincial television channel TVSantiago, the distribution began on April 22 and includes, in addition to rice, laundry and toilet soap. The allocation varies depending on the type of household and corresponds to the March-April two-month period.
Powdered milk only for newborn babies
The distribution of powdered milk was also announced, but only for children aged 0 to 20 days old, which has sparked discontent on social media. The measure also includes pregnant women and children with chronic illnesses, considered vulnerable groups.
"And what are you going to distribute for children ages 2 to 6? They need it too, in case you forgot," wrote one Facebook user, reflecting the discontent of many mothers who feel excluded from this distribution.
Rice, a key food amid shortages
Rice is one of the most essential foods in the Cuban diet. This partial delivery seeks to supplement the five pounds the State allocates monthly per person, which often do not arrive regularly. The situation is worsened by delays in distribution and the lack of clarity about when the deliveries will be completed.
This month, the government received a donation of 10.000 tons of rice from Vietnam, intended to strengthen distribution amid the growing food crisis on the island. However, authorities have not specified how this shipment will be managed or whether it will expand coverage to other vulnerable groups.
A crisis that gives no respite
The food situation in Cuba continues to be marked by shortages, inflation, and logistical problems, under a rationing system that has lost its capacity to respond. The current delivery in Santiago de Cuba confirms what many families already suffer: the basic food basket is not being delivered on time or with sufficient products.
Meanwhile, the population continues to rely on partial deliveries and announcements that don't always translate into real products on the table.

This donated rice is generally free or charged because where I live it belongs to the Artemisa province and in some municipalities it arrived at 5 pounds per consumer and in my town it arrived at 1 pound with the price of 150 pesos and it expires on April 30th, it has to be bought in a week and this rice belongs to the donation basket or what's more there are 2 year old children who have a shipment of powdered milk delayed from this year and until now they say that we should ignore it that we will not see it again, this happened with the first milk when they are born and the basket. We really have to be equitable with these issues
Hello, they're going to have to remove the news because it tells too many lies.
Where is the rice donation from Vietnam? They promised 2 lbs. I think it's time to tell the truth, as our Fidel taught us, they are constantly informing or trying to inform and in the end, now a pound of rice for Santiago is not delivered. What an outrage! What happened with the 3 lbs of potatoes? They distributed them in the warehouse and they had to pick up all the rotten ones. Now they are being sold free of charge at 65 and 80. cup, authorized by the government and intermediaries at 120 cupThat's very good, at least that's what happens in Palma Soriano.
When they started unloading the rice from the ship, they said the 7 pounds per consumer was complete. Then they said they would give us 4 pounds to speed up the process, and that when they were finished, they would give us the remaining 3 pounds. In the end, they gave us 1 pound. So what?
Well, and only the rice in Santiago de Cuba and the other provinces we make, Holguín is the worst of all, with what they pay us for retirement it's not enough for anything, we are starving.
Since March, Santo Suárez hasn't delivered rice to Havana, and the poverty in this country makes it impossible to buy anything on the street. So, you either eat plain rice or, if you're lucky, you eat ground beef.
I believe that in Cuba rice should not be lacking, there is a lot of wasted land here in Cuba that could be planted again.cupera to plant rice there are bananas in the municipality
