Rice, sugar, milk, and other items in the standard family basket have begun to be distributed in several Cuban provinces, after weeks of delay.
National shortages and high prices on the informal market continue to make these subsidized foods vital for millions of families on the island.
Rice trickles down to the eastern provinces
In Santiago de Cuba, the unloading of a ship carrying imported rice began last Tuesday at the Guillermón Moncada port.
The grain is destined for several provinces in eastern Cuba. According to official media, logistical arrangements have been created to expedite delivery from warehouses to consumers.
Meanwhile, the distribution in this province includes three pounds of rice per consumer, corresponding to April, and one kilogram for children up to 13 years old and adults over 60, which still corresponds to March.
The delivery of two more pounds of rice for the same month of April was also announced, as well as 10 days of milk for children between the ages of 2 and 6.
Pinar del Río distributes rice, compotes, milk and eggs
In the western part of the country, the situation is no more encouraging. In Pinar del Río, the distribution of the family basket includes the completion of seven pounds of rice for the month of April.
The third and fourth rounds of baby food, two pounds of May sugar, powdered milk for infants ages 2 to 6, and eggs for pregnant women from last month are also being distributed. Some medical diets for children are also mentioned.
Delays and accumulation of pending months
Food shortages, inflation and logistical difficulties have led to a worrying buildupcupbefore in distribution.
Current deliveries, in many cases, correspond to products pending from March, April, or even May.
This situation directly affects the most vulnerable population, who cannot afford the high prices of street markets, where a kilogram of rice, sugar, or milk can cost more than the average daily wage.
Rice prices on the informal market can exceed 200 Cuban pesos per pound, while a bag of powdered milk can easily reach 1,200 pesos.
For an average family, this makes the standard basket an essential, albeit insufficient, source of sustenance.
The basic food basket remains a limited but vital resource
Although the food distributed through the food warehouse system does not cover the minimum needs of a balanced diet, for many families it represents the only way to guarantee a minimum daily meal.
Inflation, shortages, and a lack of alternatives are worsening the food situation across the country.
