Although many believed it had already peaked, the euro continues its silent rise in Cuba's informal currency market. An image captured this Saturday on the specialized website elTOQUE confirmed that the European currency was trading at 400.50 CUP, which represents a new increase compared to previous days.
A trend that does not stop
The slight increase of half a peso in the last few hours—from 400 to 400.50—may seem marginal, but it represents much more than a simple decimal change. For thousands of Cubans who buy euros on the street to send remittances, pay for services from abroad, or purchase products, every peso counts.
A few hours later, the euro was once again quoted at 400.00 CUP, but analysts from monitoring platforms warn about the unstable and sensitive behavior of this currency against the Cuban peso.
In parallel, the MLC went up two points (from 260 to 262 CUP), And Zelle rebounded 10 points, reaching the 380 CUP this Sunday, June 9, according to the most recent data from the informal market.
A ceiling with no visible limit
In May 2024, the euro broke the psychological barrier of 400 pesos for the first time, but it was a short-lived rally. Now, with an even more deteriorating economy, the rally appears to have more solid foundations.
The sustained rise in recent weeks reflects a worrying realitycupin view of: The Cuban peso has no brakes on its devaluation, and as long as there are no clear signs of economic stabilization or the opening of a functioning foreign exchange market, currencies will continue to set the pace.
What can you buy with the average salary?
With an average salary of 5,839 CUP —according to ONEI—, a Cuban could only buy today 14.5 EurosIt's not even enough to exchange 20 euros, which is often needed to top up an international top-up or pay for an online subscription.
Domestic prices continue to rise, in line with the euro and dollar exchange rates: food, medicine, and services linked to payments in foreign currency are becoming increasingly inaccessible to those without foreign aid.
The real impact for the average Cuban
Beyond the daily rate, the constant rise of the euro directly affects quality of life. Those who have to buy euros to receive packages from abroad, send money to their children, or pay for online courses know this well. Every increase, no matter how small, it's bad news for those who live off CUP.
And meanwhile, the State offers no clear alternative. There is no reliable official market, no signs of reform, nor an exchange rate that returns any kind of value to the national peso.
How far can you go?
Experts believe that if strong measures are not taken to support the CUP, The euro could continue its rise over the next few weeks. In practice, it's already emerging as one of the most solid and sought-after currencies in the country.
For now, The euro sends a clear signal again: Its ceiling in Cuba remains a mystery, and the real value of the Cuban peso is a mystery that many have already stopped calculating.
