Dozens of Cuban migrants who entered the United States through the CBP One app have faced a critical situation since Tuesday, May 13: they have lost their work permits, lost legal status, and could be deported.
End of work permit and no immigration protection
The Trump administration had sent notification letters two weeks ago, warning that these documents would officially expire on May 13. So far, no lawsuit has been filed to stop the revocations.
“We're desperate because our work permits will be suspended in just a few hours,” said Heidy, a Cuban migrant who arrived with her husband and two young daughters. “Without him, it would be impossible to work and support ourselves in this country,” she added.
He explained that they are awaiting a hearing in immigration court, so they do not consider voluntarily leaving the country, as suggested by the government, to be a viable option.
Human and family impact
Another affected Cuban said his family is detained in Mexico, and he now has no resources to help them: "My wife and daughter couldn't get in, and I have a lot of things to pay for here."
A young migrant who also entered through CBP One stated that her family is “very worried.”cup“ada” because the work permit was the only way to support themselves while they prepared their application for political asylum.
Legal consequences and warnings from lawyers
Attorney Mayron Gallardo explained that those who received the revocation letters cannot continue working legally. "Doing so would be an immigration violation, and could even be considered a crime under federal law," he warned.
Those who haven't received the notification may still be able to continue working, although the attorney clarified that this will depend on whether the Department of Homeland Security decides to send them a letter as well.
Regarding the effects this situation would have on future implementation of the Cuban Adjustment Act, Gallardo stated that "no one should be allowed to work without a permit."
Uncertainty for more than 900 people
Although there are no official figures, more than 900 migrants entered the United States through CBP One. It is unknown how many have received letters revoking their work permits, nor whether there will be new legal action to halt these measures.
Many now fear losing their source of income and becoming more vulnerable. They have no clear options for regularizing their status or guarantees of protection against expedited deportation.
