The Spanish government has launched the digital ID card system: you can download it to your mobile phone from your own home.

You can request it in person and carry it on your phone to use for a multitude of tasks, such as opening a bank account. We provide a step-by-step guide so you can download it.

From April 2 2025 Spain has launched officially The digital DNI. This is an electronic version of the national identity document that can now be carried on a mobile phone. While it has been clarified that it does not replace the physical format, it allows the holder to be identified in in-person procedures with full legal validity.

The official app is called MiDNI and is already available. However, for the first year, its use will be limited to in-person transactions. Online features, such as electronic signatures, will be enabled starting in 2026.

What can you do with the new digital ID?

With the digital ID, it's now possible to identify yourself before public and private organizations without having to carry a physical document. It's useful, for example, for voting, opening a bank account, checking into a hotel, or picking up a package.

The system has been designed to enhance privacy: when using it, the holder can choose which data to display. Depending on the need, a QR code can be generated with just the name and age, or all the data from the physical document can be included.

However, for now, it won't be valid for traveling abroad or crossing borders. But only for a short time, as these features will be implemented later, in a second phase, according to the National Police.

Greater security and also comfort

The development of MyDNI It has been carried out by the Ministry of the Interior and the National Police, in collaboration with the National Mint and Stamp Factory. It is part of a broader plan to modernize the relationship between citizens and administrations.

During this transition year, public and private entities must adapt their systems to recognize and accept the new digital format. In the meantime, the use of DNI on mobile devices is voluntary and will coexist with traditional DNI.

This is how you can obtain your digital ID

Step by step to activate the digital ID on your mobile

  1. Have a valid ID: It is essential that the document is active and that its electronic certificates are not expired.

  2. Link the DNI to the mobile number:

    • This can be done online if you have a card reader and the login details for your electronic ID.

    • It is also possible to do so at a police station, using a Documentation Update Post (PAD), or when renewing your ID.

    • In all cases, you will receive a code via SMS to confirm the link.

  3. Download the official MiDNI app:

    • Available on Google Play and App Store.

    • When you open it, you enter your ID number and the document support number.

    • A secure password is created or access is enabled with fingerprint or facial recognition.

    • The system will send an SMS with a code that will allow you to complete the activation.

  4. Start using the digital DNI:

    • Once active, the user can generate a QR code with the information they wish to display.

    • This QR code has a limited lifespan and is validated directly by the National Police servers, ensuring its authenticity.

  1. Hello, a very good system, but for those of us who have been waiting for months for the Spanish birth certificate under the Democratic Memory Law, it has been impossible to obtain it.
Who can explain this delay? It's a fact that we need it, please!

  2. I think you can also talk about all the slowness and lies from the Spanish embassy in Havana. It's taking them more than 11 months to register, and after March 17th, everything has slowed down, even though they said it would be faster. Many of us are complaining on Twitter, but I think you can help us much more.

  3. I think they can also talk about the slowness of the Spanish embassy in Havana, that after the famous DICirge system was implemented on March 17, everything is slower now, something that is not understood, imagine that it takes them almost a month to register three days of June and they still have not finished with those days. Many people take almost 11 months to be registered and without counting the annexes 7. I think you could help us by making our voices heard.cuchey, we're trying through Twitter, but I think you guys can help us too.
