This inexpensive card will allow you to fly within the United States without a passport or REAL ID.
The United States is about to change the rules for boarding domestic flights. Starting May 7, 2025, new requirements will come into effect at airports, but there is an alternative document that can avoid complications for those without a REAL ID.
What is a passport card and what is it for?
The U.S. passport card is a valid option for domestic travel since the REAL ID standard went into effect. Although it doesn't allow international flights, it does meet the requirements for identifying you with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) on domestic flights.
These are its main benefits:
Valid for 10 years for adults and 5 years for children under 16.
Lowest cost: $65 for adults, compared to $165 for a book passport.
More affordable renewal: it costs $30, compared to $130 for a traditional passport.
It allows crossing land borders with Canada and Mexico, and can be used in Caribbean seaports when traveling by ship.
Practical format: it is the size of a driver's license, ideal to carry in your wallet.
How to apply for a passport card
To obtain a passport card, you must complete Form DS-11, the same form used to apply for a book passport. You can apply for both documents at the same time or just the card.
If you already have a traditional passport, you can also apply for a passport card if you want both options available.
Do you need a passport card if you already have a REAL ID?
Not necessarily. If you have a driver's license issued by a state that meets REAL ID requirements, you can use it for domestic flights. These licenses are easily identified by the star in the upper right corner.
Both a passport card and a REAL ID are valid for domestic flights. The choice depends on which document you prefer to carry and the associated costs.
What changes with the entry into force of REAL ID
From May 7 2025, all travelers in the United States will be required to present REAL ID-compliant identification to board domestic flights or enter secured federal facilities.
This law was passed after the attacks of September 11, 2001, and although its implementation has been postponed several times, it will finally come into effect gradually starting this year.
To obtain a REAL ID, states generally require:
Social Security number.
Proof of residence.
Valid identity document.
Officials have insisted that REAL ID aims to strengthen security controls and verify the identity and legal status of citizens and residents traveling within the country.
