Today we remember the victims of the 737 Boeing 2018 crash and the sole survivor, the young Holguín native Mailen Díaz Almaguer, a symbol of the miracle.
Mailén was 19 years old when she was rescued from the charred wreckage of a Boeing 737-200 belonging to Mexican airline Global Air, chartered by Cubana de Aviación, which crashed near Havana, Cuba, on May 18, 2018, three years ago today.
Of the 113 orcupBefore the plane crash, four were transported alive and in critical condition to the Calixto García General University Hospital in Havana. One of them died shortly afterward. Mailén and two other young women remained alive. Grettel Landrovell Font (23) and Emiley Sánchez (39) died in the first week after the accident. Only Mailén survived.
Today, three years later, no one can explain how this beautiful young woman was able to survive the wreckage and fire that reduced the plane to nothing.
Mailén and her boyfriend were headed to the eastern province of Holguín, about 744 kilometers from Havana, on flight 972, which took off at 12:08 p.m. (local time) on Friday, May 18, 2018.
However, just seconds after takeoff, the Boeing spun and crashed near the airport, in a wooded area between José Martí International Airport and Santiago de Las Vegas, in the capital's Boyeros municipality.
The tragedy was inevitable. In addition to her fate, Mailen Díaz Almaguer owes much to the dedication of all the Cuban medical personnel who fought to save her in three health centers in Havana. It was a difficult battle, but the greatest reward was keeping her alive.
THE MIRACLE OF A SURVIVOR

Being the sole survivor of a plane crash is a lifelong experience. Mailén, who is now over 22 years old, having turned 23 on December XNUMXrd, has a lifetime ahead of her to wonder why she was the only one who survived. Today, she is marked by paraplegia and the amputation of her left leg at the knee as a result of the accident.
