4G is the abbreviated name for the fourth generation of technology. LTE (Long Term Evolution), a more advanced generation with greater bandwidth for data traffic.
The benefits of LTE FDD for Cuba are numerous. It makes better use of the radio spectrum and is used by 80 percent of cell phone manufacturers worldwide. Furthermore, it is the most widely used in Cuba.
In Cuba, the 4G network will only be enabled for data traffic in principle, although according to statements by officials of the Cuban Telecommunications Company (ETECSA) and the company itself, ETECSA's official website, the 4G network is planned to be deployed later when a slightly more dense 4G network is available. This will be implemented on the 2G and 3G networks that will remain in use on the island.
The maximum speed that can be reached on a 4G/LTE network in Cuba, according to ETECSA, depends on the number of users requesting traffic on it, the type of data traffic they are carrying out (i.e. instant messaging, video streaming, etc.), so it is not convenient to talk about a specific speed in the country.
On Friday, March 8, The testing of this technology began in Cuba, with those who met all the requirements. There is no date for the end of the trial.
The LTE coverage areas for testing this technology in Cuba are the northern coast of Havana, from Havana Bay (the White House) to Santa Fe. Work is underway to expand it to Mariel in Artemisa.
4G network coverage is currently also available in Matanzas province, specifically in the areas of Varadero and Cárdenas. The intention is for this type of technology to be deployed in the provincial capitals, main municipalities, and tourist areas of Cuba.
For the use of the benefits of the LTE network to a group of high data consumption customers, who must also meet the following conditions:
- Residing or spending significant time generating data traffic in areas where 4G network coverage is available.
- Generate data traffic equal to or greater than 1.5 GB per month. (This has been extended since it was initially for those who consumed 2.5 GB or more.)
- Have a terminal that supports LTE FDD at 1800 MHz / Band 3.
- Having an USIM.
The rates for the 4G network in Cuba are the same as those in effect today:
