Accident deaths increase in Cuba
Colonel Roberto Rodríguez Fernández, head of the Specialized Traffic Unit of the General Directorate of the National Revolutionary Police (PNR), explained that the human factor continues to be the primary cause of 91% of reported accidents. Among the most frequent violations are inattention while driving, disregard for traffic signs, improper overtaking, and excessive speed, the latter of which is implicated in 21% of fatalities.
Likewise, Rodríguez Fernández highlighted that the days luneSundays and Wednesdays are the days with the highest number of accidents, while Sundays and Tuesdays are the deadliest. The hours of greatest risk are between 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.
Regarding the profile of victims, drivers represent the majority, with a high incidence among young people aged 21 to 25 and those over 70. Although accidents involving pedestrians have decreased by 18%, they remain the most dangerous, mainly due to excessive speed and low risk perception.
Transport Minister Eduardo Rodríguez Dávila acknowledged that current results are unsatisfactory and called for intensified awareness campaigns, enhanced road safety education, and increased breathalyzer tests as measures to reduce accidents on Cuban roads.
