The arrest followed a background check that revealed the individual's pending immigration status.

The arrest was made possible thanks to coordination between USCIS and ICE, which acted after confirming that the applicant, whose identity was not revealed, had had an active final removal order for nearly 30 years. The Cuban citizen had come to the office intending to advance his application for permanent residence.

“We are committed to making America safe again,” said USCIS in a social media post announcing the case. The arrest comes at a time when the federal government is increasing its enforcement efforts to identify and deport individuals with irregular immigration records or unexecuted deportation orders.
