La note An official from Cuba's National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (Inder) notes:

"We inform you that players Rafael Viñales Álvarez and Denis Peña Rivero did not travel back to Cuba as part of the delegation that represented us in the American Baseball Champions League, held in Mexico City."

In the statement, they describe it as "an attitude that turns its back on the commitment made." The news has generated a lot of comments on social media. “Commitment? They kept their promise, played all the games, and then left. There was commitment,” wrote Facebook user B. Sagarra.

“They should understand that human beings are born free by the grace of God. They did what they thought was best for their lives because in Cuba, being a baseball player, a doctor, or a teacher isn't just about living, it's about surviving. Good luck to the boys and a wise decision,” said E. Bloqueado.

Baseball players Rafael Viñales Álvarez and Denis Peña Rivero did not return to Cuba.

Other Cuban baseball fans speculated about what the future might hold for these players. “Congratulations and blessings, excellent decision. They won't make it to the MLB, but at least they have the quality to play in the Caribbean and Mexican Leagues, where they'll surely earn a better salary and be able to better support their families,” stated P. Zulueta.

However, some fans aren't so sure. "Viñales was signed to the Mexican League a while back, and his contract lasted the length of a merengue at a school gate. Peña spent about ten years in the Dominican Republic, and no team would sign him, and he decided to return to Cuba," warned R. Macías.

The truth is that many athletes who choose not to return to the island do so knowing they will likely never be able to pursue sports again. Even so, the country's stifling situation compels them to leave.

  1. He who lives more or less well, without so much sacrifice, and does not have the courage to take risks, at least, should not criticize those who try, because there are positions that are very easy to criticize, without being in the other person's shoes.

  2. These athletes will never be able to repay the money the Cuban government invested in their training, their travel, or the trust their people placed in them.

  3. They finished the Competition, which was their commitment, and then decided to stay.
Well, the truth is that anyone who goes anywhere wants to stay because life in Cuba has become practically impossible, especially for baseball players from the eastern region, where power outages last more than 10 hours almost daily. They have the right to seek a better life for themselves and their families. I wish them the best of luck.
