Immigration attorney Wilfredo Allen spoke with journalist Daniel Benítez about the uncertain immigration outlook that the Cuban community could face following the possible arrival of Donald Trump to the presidency.
Allen expressed his deep concerncupaction for Cubans in transit through Nicaragua and Mexico, as well as for those who have sold everything in their country of origin to try to enter the United States through the southern border.
"Who torments me and who worries me?"cupa? The Cubans who are in Nicaragua on their way to Mexico, the Cubans who have been in Mexico for months, who this president already said he would eliminate. The Cubans who have sold everything and risked everything to enter through the border are the ones I worry about.cup"an enormously," he declared in the YouTube Channel from Benitez.
The lawyer warned that access to humanitarian parole could become even more complicated in the coming months. "The applications for this month and December are already difficult, but after January they will be even more miserable," he explained.
pricecupAction for immigration restrictions: Cubans and the future of humanitarian parole
He mentioned that, although October figures have not yet been released, just over a thousand applications were approved in September. This drop in numbers, he said, is a clear sign that "humanitarian parole is dead for Cubans, as well as for Venezuelans, Nicaraguans, and Haitians."
“I suspect thousands will enter, thousands—1.000, 2.000, 3.000—before January. After January, no one else will. Someone asked me the idea: 'Well, I already applied, there's a line.' I tell them that line doesn't exist. The day it ends, they're lost, my brothers.”
CBP One Appointments
He also addressed the concerncupregarding the situation of applicants waiting for appointments through the CBP One system. Although around 1,450 appointments are currently processed daily, Allen warned that whoever heads the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will have the authority to significantly reduce this number, which could stifle the process until it is eliminated.
"So maybe it doesn't end with CBP One"It's hanging him. Why? Because instead of having 1.450 appointments, he has 50, he has 100, and he's reducing the number of people who can go through the CBP One pipeline until they eliminate it completely," Allen concluded.
The Cuban community, like other migrant communities, remains in suspense over the uncertain future of the immigration policies that could be implemented if Trump returns to the presidency. The restrictions could mark a radical shift in the entry of migrants seeking a new beginning in the United States.
