The Cuban government advises importing electric tricycles with solar panels.

Cuban Transport Minister Eduardo Rodríguez Dávila recently highlighted the importance of importing electric tricycles equipped with solar panels.

Regarding the importation of electric vehicles, the minister stated: "The possibility of importing, under the same conditions, an electric tricycle, preferably with solar panels, which have preferential tariffs, is now available."

What are the tariff benefits for importing solar panels to Cuba?

Official Gazette No. 67 Extraordinary, published on July 28, 2021, introduced new developments regarding the import of photovoltaic systems by natural persons in Cuba. 

Since that date, the non-commercial import of systems that generate or operate with renewable energy sources, along with their parts and components, has been authorized, with no quantity limits. 

At a press conference, Lee García, an official from the Ministry of Finance and Prices, stated that these technologies are exempt from customs duties and are not included in the import limit for travelers.

For her part, the then director general of customs processes reported that imports can be made via accompanied or unaccompanied baggage, as well as via air, sea, or postal shipments. 

Cuban Customs specifies that this type of merchandise must be identified and separated from other baggage, in accordance with Resolution 208 of 2021 of the Ministry of Energy and Mines, published in the Official Gazette.

Equipment released from tariffs in Cuba: photovoltaic energy

The equipment allowed for import includes solar heaters, photovoltaic pumps, small wind turbines, geomembrane managers, biogas pumps, solar lighting, and solar air conditioning systems. 

According to the sources, customers can order them from three national importers: Copextel, Cimex, and Tecnoimport. They can also be purchased through Cimex's e-commerce site in freely convertible currency.
