85 routers intercepted at Havana airport: What does the law say about importing these devices into Cuba?

The General Customs Office of the Republic of Cuba continues to report on the increase in border control activities and seizures at Cuban airports.

Recently, Wiliam Pérez González, First Deputy Chief of the Cuban Customs, announced that the Illegal entry of 85 router devices through Havana airport, in violation of “current regulations and standards.” 

He also stated that the number of devices detected belonging to the same person indicated other illegal activities, prompting Customs to implement the measures provided in these cases, although he did not specify which ones. 

La Cuban Customs reiterated that the importation of routersIt must be carried out in accordance with the regulations established for such purposes by the Ministry of Communications.

Bringing routers to Cuba: Is it prohibited?

The regulations establish: "Natural or legal persons require express authorization to enter the country issued by the General Directorate of Communications of the Ministry of Communications, which does not constitute a license or permit for installation or operation, when they are interested in importing these telecommunications equipment, parts, and implements on a non-commercial basis."

  1. What I don't understand is why Etecsa doesn't have replacement equipment. They want to extend the service, but they can't guarantee that someone's equipment will break down under certain circumstances and have to continue paying without receiving service, and there's no solution. My equipment was damaged due to high voltage, and there's no way to replace it. It's inconceivable.
