Description
A robust, erect herb, growing to over 2 m tall. The leaves are sheathed and petioled. The male flowers are borne in compound clusters (panicles) at the ends of the stems, while the female flowers are arranged on a swollen, spongy axis (cob) in the leaf axils. The dried fruits (grains) vary in color (white, yellow, or red).

Phenology
Annual plant. Approximately 20 days after flowering begins, the ears are ready for harvest.

Origin
The original species is native to continental tropical America, where it was cultivated before the Discovery. It is now cultivated worldwide.

Location
Grown on a production scale for domestic consumption in flat areas throughout Cuba. On a smaller scale, in backyards and small plots in rural and urban areas.

Useful part
The styles ("hairs" of the corncobs).

Other attributed properties (Not yet approved)
The decoction of the styles is attributed with cardiotonic and hypotensive properties.

Warnings
Do not overindulge in fresh styles, as they contain a high concentration of salicylic acid.

Other uses
Tender or dried fruits are of significant nutritional importance. In ancient times and to this day, they constitute the staple food of some societies. The seeds contain an oil that is an important source for extracting vitamin E.

Alternative
The presence of volatile oil, tannins, sugars, traces of alkaloids, a lipid substance, mineral salts and salicylic acid has been determined in the styles.

Cultivation
It propagates by seed. Sowing can be done either in spring (rainy season) or in winter (dry season). In Cuba, sowing is generally done between April and May. Sow in rows about 70 cm apart. After germination, thin the plants, leaving about 30 cm between them.

Preparation and dosage
DECOCTION: Boil 3-15 g of fresh styles in 20 liter of water for 1 minutes. Drink 500-700 ml daily in 3 divided doses.
