Honorary Vice Consulates of Spain in Cuba: Spanish citizenship procedures

Spain has three Honorary Vice Consulates in Cuba. These are located in the provincial capitals of Santa Clara, Camagüey, and Santiago de Cuba.

The functions of these Honorary Vice Consulates of Spain in Cuba are much more limited than those of a career Consulate, particularly in matters relating to travel documents, Consular Registration, or Consular Civil Registration.

The Honorary Vice Consulates of Spain in Cuba handle some of the procedures for obtaining Spanish citizenship. Thousands of residents on the island are direct descendants of Spanish emigrants, exiled between 1936 and 1955, who settled in Cuba. These descendants of Iberian emigrants were able to complete the procedures for obtaining Spanish citizenship under the protection of the Historical Memory Law, known as the "Grandchildren's Law," approved in 2007 during the Iberian government of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero.

In 2018, the approval of Law 122/55 "on the granting of Spanish nationality to descendants born abroad to Spanish parents" expanded the possibility for more Cubans to opt for Spanish citizenship. In this case, the Law allows the granting of Spanish nationality to:

Grandchildren of Spanish women married to a non-Spaniard before the 1978 Constitution came into force

Those of legal age whose parents acquired Spanish nationality through the law of historical memory

Grandchildren of economic emigrants who obtained the nationality of the host country and lost their Spanish nationality before the birth of their child.

Grandchildren of Spaniards who, having held Spanish nationality, lost it for not ratifying their desire to retain it when they came of age.

The completion of all the necessary procedures for descendants protected by law to obtain Spanish citizenship within the island is largely carried out by the Honorary Vice Consulates, entities with the authority to do so in the different territories where they are located.

To complete the procedures for obtaining Spanish citizenship in Cuba, interested parties must have their own personal birth certificate and the birth certificate of their grandparents. In the case of Spaniards, this must be obtained from the Central Civil Registry of Spain through the Auxilio Registral (Registral Assistance).

At the Honorary Vice Consulates of Spain in the country to which the interested party resides, they will be provided with complete information on the process of obtaining Spanish citizenship, as well as what services are managed in whole or in part by the Vice Consulate itself.
