How to recognize a valid REAL ID?

Approved cards have a special marking at the top: it can be a star, or in some states like California, a bear with a star. This is what TSA officials will look for at security checkpoints.

Enhanced driver's licenses (EDLs) issued by five states will also be accepted: Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont, and Washington.

Documents required to apply for it

To obtain a REAL ID, you must go in person to a Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office and present:

  • An official document proving your full name and date of birth (such as a valid birth certificate or passport).

  • A document that proves your Social Security number.

  • Two documents that prove current residence (such as utility bills or rental agreements).

  • Proof of legal immigration status in the country.

Each state may have additional requirements, so it's recommended to check the official DMV website in advance.

Children are not required to present a REAL ID to fly domestically, but accompanying adults are. Failure to present this document will result in the inability to pass through airport security, even if the ticket has already been purchased.

It's important to understand that the REAL ID does not replace a passport on international flights or allow border crossings. Its sole purpose is to legally identify travelers on domestic flights and allow entry to federal buildings with controlled access.

What happens if you don't have it?

If after May 7, 2025 If you do not have a REAL ID or EDL, you will not be able to board commercial flights within the United States, nor enter facilities such as federal courts, government offices, or military bases.

Authorities recommend completing the application as soon as possible, as high demand at DMV offices and long delays in appointments are expected in the weeks leading up to the measure's implementation.
