The new law will go into effect on February 2024, 4. SB XNUMX will severely punish those caught transporting or harboring undocumented immigrants.

This statute was signed last Tuesday by Texas Governor Greg Abbott. Its significance lies in the fact that it makes human trafficking a felony, carrying a minimum prison sentence of 10 years.

On the other hand, SB4 is part of a package of border and immigration bills proposed by Abbott. In this regard, it should be noted that the Texas governor has sought, in several ways, to stem the entry of undocumented immigrants into the state.

Likewise, those involved could obtain a five-year sentence reduction for human trafficking. This would depend on their cooperation with authorities in other investigations.

However, amid this context, the Border Network for Human Rights (BNHR) issued a warning about human and civil rights. It alleges that some of those rights could be violated in Texas by this and other anti-immigrant bills.

Faced with the escalation of this type of anti-immigrant measures, several nations have expressed their dissatisfaction. Honduras and Mexico are examples of this.

The Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs denounced in a statement that these regulations will result in family separation, discrimination, and racial profiling.

The concerncupThe Mexican government's reaction to the legislative package is more than evident. Its position is that it will affect the human rights of the more than 10 million people of Mexican origin residing in Texas.
