According to the Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, the measure seeks to temporarily house those who are under deportation orders, especially in cases where the countries of origin, such as Cuba and Venezuela, do not accept their repatriation.

A resource under evaluation

In an interview with Fox News, Noem was asked about the feasibility of sending detained immigrants to Guantanamo Bay. Although she declined to confirm whether the administration would take this step, she did acknowledge that it is under evaluation.

"It's the president's decision, but it's a resource, and we'll continue to explore how we can use all our resources to keep America safe.", the official said.

The Guantanamo base has historically been a detention center in exceptional situations. In 2002, during the government of George W. Bush, a special area was set up to detain terrorist suspects within the framework of the "global war on terror".

Opaque conditions and criticism regarding the treatment of detainees

Despite being a base under US control, Guantanamo operates in a legal limbo, outside of US immigration laws. Migrants detained at this location have remained in poorly documented conditions and with limited access to legal assistance.

A report published in 2024 by The New York Times revealed allegations about precarious conditions within the facilities, including the presence of wheel, the restriction of communication with lawyers and the use of opaque vision glasses in internal transfers.

As the Trump administration considers this option, human rights organizations have expressed concern.cupaction in the event that migrants are sent to a center with history of controversial arrests.
