China will lease this iconic hotel in Havana

The Chinese government is positioning itself in Cuban tourism with plans to lease this iconic hotel in Havana. This is part of the package of measures announced this week by Prime Minister Manuel Marrero to "save" Cuban tourism. In the framework of the Cuba-China Business Forum, a memorandum of understanding was signed for collaboration in tourism between both nations, confirmed the official newspaper Granma.

As part of this approach, two letters of intent were finalized to negotiate the lease of the Copacabana Hotel in Havana by China, a significant step in the consolidation of the Asian presence in the Cuban tourism sector.

This agreement would be part of a broader strategy seeking to strengthen economic and cultural ties between Cuba and China, according to Dai Bin, president of the China Tourism Academy.

The expert affirmed that bilateral cooperation in tourism will advance "firmly" and is headed toward promising horizons, with steady growth in tourist exchanges thanks to the innovative air route from Beijing to Havana, with a stopover in Madrid, Spain.

China will lease a hotel in Havana and facilitate visa requirements for Cubans.

Between 2010 and 2019, Cuban tourism to China registered an average annual increase of 10,1%. By 2024, Chinese tourists who chose Cuba as a destination grew by an impressive 48,6%, reinforcing the island's attractiveness to the Asian market.

China is also pushing an ambitious plan to turn Cuba into the main air hub in the Caribbean for flights from Asia, with tourist routes that include multiple stops in the region.

In addition, both sides are working on initiatives to strengthen mutual cultural understanding and improve tourism services for Chinese travelers in Cuba.

this future lease agreement for the Copacabana Hotel would mark a new chapter in foreign investment in Cuban tourism, consolidating the Chinese presence on the island.
